This Bali inspired wedding comes to us from CC Roa from ROA Floral and Event Design. Bali is a place filled with lush gardens and dripping with sunshine. When CC’s clients asked her to create for them a floral getaway in their own backyard, she did not disappoint. What’s better than Bali coming to Vancouver?

A wonderfully light and airy cherry blossom wedding editorial is the perfect remedy for a rainy day. We had a flurry of a season here in Vancouver with all of the beautiful cherry trees that are planted around the city and GVRD.

Today’s wedding inspiration comes to us from our dear friend and Moda Member, Suzanne Le Stage of Eyes of Le Stage Photography  in Kelowna, BC. What talent we have all around the province!

Bouquet Inspiration

Bouquet Inspiration on Floral Tuesday

Bouquets and ribbons for this sunny Floral Tuesday! We love to feature our member’s work and see what beautiful things they are cooking up! Today, we are featuring some Instagram love from Moda Members: Briar Johnston of Epic Events (@epiceventsvan), Jayme Carter of A Unique Boutique Floral (@uniqueboutiquefloral), with guest feature from Myrtle et Olive (@myrtleetolive).

I’m happy to see that there is so much variety within floral design today. Long gone are the days when ‘wedding’ was synonymous with only roses, baby’s breath and lilies. I feel that the more creativity and variety within design, the more we can offer our clients with a wide range of shapes, textures and colours. With summer just around the corner, we’re looking forward to a season full of colour and excitement!

Happy swooning!

When flowers say it all

Moda Member, CC Roa of Roa Luxurious Floral Event Design: “I am able to share my deep love and passion for floral art and design with the beautiful people I come across – from discerning clients, to colourful guests at events, to the greater community, and people from every walk of life. It humbles me to be able to share my gifts with everyone I encounter at every step of the process, and to reap the intrinsic rewards that come with serving others. It’s such a treat whenever my work aligns with an opportunity to give back to the community through volunteering, teaching, and charity work.” ~ CC Roa

Floral Tuesday: Going Green

Green: Not your usual floral go-to.

living wall giant

Photo: Green Roofs

Green is such an underused colour for weddings. There are so many kinds, textures and hues that you can use to create a stunning piece. One of the most beautiful advances in greenery design are the living walls you see around town, what genius and what great inspiration! Exposing stems, foliage and introducing new plants that may not be the regulars. Greenery is a great arena to explore for infinite possibilities.

One of our favourite inspiration moments was when we were driving the Hana Highway at 5am on Maui one year. The sun was just coming up and all you could see were the rolling hills and steep cliffs just covered in every emerald hue imaginable. The bamboo forest is an amazing place as well. What a stunner that would be to come into a reception venue looking as if you walked out into paradise!

Try to go beyond the norm, what’s been done before and look at the amazing new things coming out of the world of landscape design. Green can be used in so many facets from the bouquet, ceremony backdrop, centerpieces and even guest favours of topiaries or small succulents.

This is one of our favourite inspirations and we hope it will open up a whole new world when you think of decor for your next event.

Jayme Carter: Unique Boutiqe Florals

jayme carter unique boutique florals

Unique Boutique Florals owner and Moda member, Jayme Carter, has one goal: To create artistic pieces with the highest service and quality of product so she can exceed expectations and delight every bride on her wedding day.

Jayme believes in going above and beyond her work to include personal service and value, doing whatever it takes to make the vision a reality for her clients. Time is invested into every client, spending the time for conversation, phone calls and communication so she can get a complete understanding of her client’s exact vision. Jayme believes every client should be treated with value and should receive the same in both work and service.

Jayme began her artistic journey exploring the world of arts and crafts. Everything from hand-made soaps, candles and silk flowers have played a part into where she is today. Having a true love for flowers and art, she now has been operating Unique Boutique Florals (including decor) for more than 20 years having events of all sizes and budgets.

One of her favourite weddings was having to create more than 100 large pom-poms by hand. It took her and her team hours to create, and three solid hours to hang each one for a spectacular reception ceiling decor at the Hart House in Burnaby.

Jayme’s vision for the future is to focus on larger weddings, dedicating her entire team and efforts into producing grand events dripping with creative vision and unique style and pieces. We look forward to seeing what wonderful things she will create.

Hydrangea: A Wedding Favourite

Hydrangea: A Wedding Favouritehydrangea wedding flower

Hydrangea flowers truly are a wedding favourite. They can be a welcomed companion to many arrangements or shine by themselves as a giant ball of fluffy blooms. Hydrangeas truly are a flower for all seasons. One of the most loved characteristic about these flowers is their pom-pom-like appearance, which can serve to fill an area with fewer stems and can bring beautiful texture to any arrangement. The only word of caution about these flowers are quite heat-sensitive and wilt quickly if left out in the sun without enough water.

Most varieties come from Asia but some are available from the Americas. Colour variation is dependent on the PH levels in the soil. By simply changing the presence of certain elements such as iron or alum, you can change the colour of the blooms from pink to blue.

Many of the classic choices are white and blue but they can also come in green, purple, pink and can also be dyed many different colours.

Here are just a few of our favourite arrangements:

Flower Inspiration: Celosia

I’ve always been fascinated by the beauty and colour of flowers. They are one of my biggest inspirations when it comes time to design editorials. During one shoot, I realized that I knew very little about flowers and what kind are best for certain situations. I thought if I wanted to learn more about these beautiful balls of colour, I’m sure many others would too.

Tuesdays are dedicated to celebrating and learning about the unique characteristics and info about the flowers we see and admire in the world of weddings.

We’ve paired this month’s posts with our Colour of the Month: Pantone 7416

Celosia:

Another one of my favourite flowers that you don’t see too often at weddings. They are such an interesting flower with so many bright colour varieties and a natural resistance to warm temperatures; it’s a perfect modern summer flower.

Interesting fact:

Celosia comes in both crested (cockscomb) and plume (wool flower) varieties. Crested celosia is a result of man-made cultivation. Only the plumed are found naturally. Celosia comes from a Greek word meaning “burning,” because of the vibrant reds and oranges found in this species.

Growing Country: China, Africa, North & South America.

Colour variations: Reds to peach, pink, yellow, orange, and light green.

Availability: Peak June-September.

Best used for: Bouquets, Décor, Centrepieces, boutonnières.

Strengths: Very hardy, excellent for summer weddings. Striking neon colours.

Weaknesses: Not as traditional.

Average cost per stem in season: $5-$6 per stem.

Flower Facts: Roses, roses, roses!

Hybrid Tea Roses:

Roses are the new-traditional flower of weddings. With so many options for size and colour, it’s no wonder they are so widely used. In fact, during the seventeenth century, roses were considered as good as money. They were often used as items of bartering agreements and as actual payment.

Interesting fact: Ecuador roses mostly come from Quito. They normally have large solid buds. You can tell a quality rose and a well-watered rose by gently pinching the petals towards the base; they should feel firm and dense. The best roses grown in the UK come from David Austin, a branded grower, and are identified by a very strong fragrance to the flowers. If you receive a gift of roses and they are quite fragrant, chances are they came from there.

Growing Country: Columbia & Ecuador (large blooms). David Austin Roses (strong fragrance)

Colour variations: All colours

Availability: Year-Round (best to order a month in advance of event)

Best used for: Décor, Centrepieces, Chuppahs, Canopies, Bouquest

Strengths: Available in a variety of sizes and colours

Weaknesses: Keep Hydrated, will wilt without water. Check petal base for hardness, this indicates they have been well kept in water.

Average cost per stem in season: Retail $5 -$8 per stem, Season depending
