Premier Love Interview

An Interview with Cindy Liu from Premier Love

Premier Love Cindy Liu Headshot

“We capture your vision so we can unveil and share your intimate stories.”

Get caught up with Cindy Liu of Premier Love as she shares a few keys she discovered on her journey in the video world of weddings.

M: Why did you start your business?

C: I have always been passionate about photography and cinematography, as a medium of expression. I never had a specific dream job in mind but I knew I always wanted to work in the creative field so I could to share my work with the world.

My background has always involved some form of media. As a film major graduate and former show host of a local radio station, I was continuing to improve on a variety of communication skills that would help me create engaging content that appeals to a wider audience. It’s important to create content that the masses can connect to.

Every wedding is a different project and I get to work with different people all the time. Doing that helps widen my horizons and keeps me excited to learn something new, every time.

M: What has been the best thing you’ve learned so far?

C: I feel it’s extremely important to connect to your clients. Weddings are a very personal occasion so I go to great lengths to ensure my clients feel comfortable. I especially feel that an individual salesperson may a not click with every client, every time. If you feel you may not be able to work well with someone, it’s better that you don’t take their business. From my experience, it’s more frustrating dealing with the clients you don’t click with. To further yourself, I think it’s important to understand why you couldn’t make a connection with that client and try to isolate the reasons so you can improve upon them for next time. Don’t be afraid to get out of your comfort zone and sell yourself. You’ll click with the right people.

M: Where does your inspiration come from?

C: My inspiration comes from all of the amazing professionals around me. Watching other entrepreneurs give 110% effort every time inspires me to also work hard and give my best.

M: How do you get motivated if you find yourself creatively stuck?

C: I watch dog videos on Youtube, just kidding! I get inspired with other people’s work, seeing something new, trying something different. It’s easy to fall into a cycle of doing what’s comfortable but with social media, I can get exposed to a wide variety of other artists every day.

Savoury City Interview

Savoury City Catering with Donna Wadsworth: An Interview

Donna-Wadsworth-Savoury-City

“We collaborate with clients to create the menu they desire, and ensure that it’s beautifully presented on the big day by knowledgeable, attentive and courteous service staff.”

Get caught up with Donna Wadsworth of Savoury City catering as she shares a few keys she discovered on her journey in the culinary world of weddings.

M: Why did you start your business?

D: I love great food! It makes me crazy when it’s good, crazy good! Catering is such a ride and each client presents something different. To pull a client’s vision together, with sometimes outrageous logistics, coupled with great food that has been cooked out in a field, a barn or out of a garage, well, that’s just the best!

M: What did you want to be when you grew up:

D: I always thought an Archaeologist or a Veterinarian. I had every animal under the sun, and then some! I had an Easy Bake Oven from an early age, and well, that did it!

M: What has been a favourite highlight in your career?

D: Being asked by one of our clients to cater and personally attend to His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama. This was an exclusive group of 30 of Vancouver’s top business people gathering to meet and have an intimate conversation with His Holiness at a private home. It was an absolutely spine tingling experience, and when he arrived to the home, the air was electric. That room was filled with so much sheer joy and laughter and it was hard to contain. Truly a highlight and something I’ll always cherish.

M: What was your favourite wedding you’ve done?

D: My all-time favourite wedding was Christene and Philip. They were (and still are!) so crazy wild in love with each other, it was insane. You have to love that kind of crazy love. They were very clear on what they wanted from the get-go.

They assembled a killer team, and it was a little stressful at times, trying to pull it all off with a tight timeline for setup but we all made it happen and it was magical! There are always a ton of little things that go on behind the scenes that the client won’t see, things we have to deal with that can get you distracted but it was as close to flawless as you could get. It was filled with love and laughter!

M: How do you keep the creativity flowing:

D: Cookbooks of course – I have a mountain of them! I have Old Gourmet magazines that go back years. I have each and every issue of SAVEUR magazine. A few of my very favourite cookbook authors are Alice Waters, Suzanne Goin, Nancy Silverton and Ottolenghi. Another favourite is Jamie Oliver because he tells such a brilliant story with his food. I also find inspiration browsing Donna Hay, Jean-Georges and Thomas Keller. Interior Design magazines are another inspiration as they take me to places where I dream. While looking at those interiors, I often get new ideas. If  I’m creatively stuck I go somewhere to clear my head. Somewhere calm and peaceful, or somewhere that will inspire me. It could be to one of the Gulf Islands, or somewhere far and away. I also go to the movies, listen to live music or go somewhere totally different then my usual stops. I love going somewhere that takes me outside of myself and gives me some breathing room.

M: What has been the best thing you’ve learned over the years?

D: Get a mentor. I’ve had 2 over the last 10 years, and they’ve helped me enormously. None of us have all the answers, but their advise, wise counsel and enthusiasm have been invaluable in helping me run my business.

Science World Wedding – Ben & Dana

Science World Wedding by Vivid Moments

Science World has been around for more than 25 years and is more than just the iconic dome full of interactive and educational exhibits and programming. Our recent expansion has resulted in the creation of our Green Roof terrace. Fast becoming one of Vancouver’s more popular venues for weddings and other memorable events, the terrace overlooks the tranquil waters of False Creek and is framed by Vancouver’s prestigious skyline. The Green Roof is home to a manicured green space with flowers, shrubs and trees that add that touch of nature to complement the breathtaking view. Although a very popular event location on its own, the Green Roof is just one of many spaces enjoyed here at Science World at TELUS World of Science.

“We aim to capture the story of your wedding as it naturally unfolds, and provide you with the most breathtaking images of you and your partner that you can possibly imagine.”

“Our fall season started off with none other than Ben and Dana’s gorgeous wedding was celebrated at the wonderful Science World! We’ve heard many great things about this award winning venue and were glad to finally capture a real wedding there. Surrounded by an incredible view of False Creek and the romance of the sunset and city lights, it was the perfect background for this fun and energetic couple. We’ve found after all the weddings we’ve documented that if the bride and groom are cheerful and having a great time, so will everyone else . This was definitely the case for Ben and Dana as their guests bombarded them with laughter, applause, and high fives all throughout the night. So many wonderful moments were captured at this wedding, and the journey for these two is only just beginning.

Congratulations Ben and Dana for welcoming us into your beautiful celebration. We couldn’t be happier for you both!”

An Interview with Niche Events’ Maria Schollen

“As wedding stylists, we tell your story and create a visual experience that threads through each step of your wedding so we can celebrate who you both are and connect that theme with your guests.”

M: Why did you start your business?

MS: I am an entrepreneur by nature. I started my first business in college designing swimwear and fitness-wear . The company never took off but I was always destined to work for myself. After several careers, I went back to school for event planning and met a wonderful mentor whom I worked with for over 5 years. I quickly learned that the not-for-profit industry was not the right fit for me. Although, meaningful, it didn’t always pay the bills. While working, I discovered that I had a flair for design and floral so I decided to start my business in the fall of 2011.

M: What did you want to be when you grew up?

MS: I actually wanted to be a fashion designer. I went to school for 4 years at Kwantlen College and graduated with a diploma in fashion arts and marketing. I have a very European style, classic and timeless. That style also appeals to a very broad market in the wedding industry.

M: What is the best thing you learned over the years?

MS: My company finally opened it’s very first studio in November 2015.  It was one of the happiest moments in my business life. You need a great support team.  I have been very lucky to have my husband support me through all of my crazy business ventures. My parents were always there for me and for the last three years, my assistant, Jeanine Wilk, has been my rock. One of the most profound things I’ve learned, though sometimes the hard way, was that if you try to compete on price you will be out of business very soon.

M: Where does your inspiration come from?

MS: Wow, everywhere!  There is so much inspiration out there. I love anything to do with history or with Europe.  I design a lot around the flowers that I love. If you get stuck creatively, start at the beginning and examine what you’re trying to design. Work on one problem at a time.  It usually works itself out.

“I love capturing stylish couples with big hearts! My ultimate goal is to give them an amazing experience that results in amazing photos they will cherish for
a lifetime.”

“Brandy & Steven chose the beautiful Marriott Hotel in Vancouver to say their “I Do’s”. As the rain began to sprinkle the terrace with rain drops this couple said their “I do’s” this past August. Following the ceremony we took a stroll through Coal Harbor for some more photos.

Their elegant day was planned by the amazing Laura and her team at Epic Events. The ballroom was decorated ever beautifully with pink, grey, and cream colors. I absolutely loved their custom cake topper. The head table had a hedge of beautiful flowers set on pretty silver sequined head table cloth. Brandy & Steven – Thank you for having me capture your amazing day!”

Simply Sweet Photography

Interview with Nomo Akisawa from Simply Sweet Photography

Simply-Sweet-Photography-Nomo-Akisawa

“I am a big dreamer. I truly believe that chasing your dreams is one of the most important things in life and the key to having a successful career.”

Get caught up with Nomo Akisawa of Simply Sweet Photography as she shares a few keys she discovered on her journey to living her dream.

M: Why did you start your business?

N: I had fallen in love with photography back in my high school days, so much so that I failed high school because of it!

I lived in Edmonton for a bit – and I was following this amazing photographer.  When I moved back here to Vancouver, I had a hard time finding a good job so I picked up a camera and fell in love with it all over again.

I’ve always been really good with my hands, creating things and being artistic. I actually wanted to be a hairstylist when I grew up but when I had finished my schooling and started working, turned out that I hated it.

M: What has been the best thing you’ve learned over the years?

N: There have been many times when it has been hard.  As a creative you can battle being uninspired, self-doubt and navigating client relations can sometimes be challenging – but my best advice would be to push through it!  Owning your own business has so many ups and downs, but its about fighting through to the other side. This year, I have really determined to book exactly the kind of clients I want so I can have the client experience that is mutually beneficial.  I believe that we, as business owners, can sometimes be taken for granted by certain people and I want to work with those people who appreciate what I do and the work I create for them.

M: What has been a favourite highlight in your career?

N: There have been so many amazing experiences but one of my favourites was my first time getting published in Wedluxe Magazine. I have been dreaming of seeing my work featured in that magazine ever since I started!

M: How do you keep the creativity flowing:

N: A lot of my inspiration comes from nature.  I am constantly travelling, visiting beautiful places and when I sit and look at the scenery I get inspired to do some sort of creative work.

When I’m feeling a little stuck, I’ll do a styled shoot that will engage my creativity again.  I find that sometimes during wedding season you’ll shoot the same thing, over and over again.. and doing a creatively  styled shoot, even if i’m busy, will give me the momentum to move forward and and that lifts my creative soul.

Sundance Guest Ranch Wedding

Sundance Guest Ranch Wedding – By Jelger & Tanja

bride-groom-running-horses

“Andrea and Eoin’s “running horses wedding photograph”, photographed at the Sundance Guest Ranch in Ashcroft, went (unexpectedly) viral! I’ve seen it passing by on blogs in languages I couldn’t read, it won an award at the Shoot and Share Contest and got featured on huge blogs such as Petapixel, My Modern Met, Huffington Post and Junebug Weddings.

All of this is of course AMAZING, but I do want to share Andrea and Eoin’s wedding for more than that! At the time this Irish duo booked us we kinda had an idea that their ranch wedding would be a lot of fun, but boy we had no idea what a blast we’d have! On top of that we got to know them better and I feel that we share a mindset about living an adventurous lifestyle and not settling down. 🙂 They are also the ones that got us into car camping“…Read More Here.

The Jar Girl

“We believe in loving existing antiques so we can be kind to the earth and not produce more waste.”

With over 40,000 jars in her vault, a mason jar wedding is an easy feat with Moda Member, The Jar Girl.

The entire jar collection was purchased used, scouting out every thrift shop, garage sale, estate sale and antique dealer anywhere near where they traveled. Marie then carted the jars home and lovingly cleaned, scrubbed and restored each one by hand.

In the fall of 2013, after many years and hundreds of hours searching for the perfect addition, Marie was finally ready to open her rental shop and share her love of jars with you.

Many of the jars themselves are timeless antiques, dating back from even the early 1900’s!!

We’ve gathered our favourite jar inspirations and paired them with the perfect fit from The Jar Girl’s collection for fun and creative ways to add colour and light to any occasion!

Sandra went on to tell us how she has built a proven business over the years, all based on building that client connection.

“I still write Christmas cards by hand to all my clients, from this year and years past. I want them to know I still care for them. I keep connected to their social media and thoughtfully comment, and keep up with what’s happening in their lives. I’ll reach out on anniversaries and birthdays; little touches here and there. I’ll even write friendly emails to just to find out how they’re doing. People are always surprised about how I remember the little things, the small personal details about their lives.”

Yaletown Photography currently offers wedding photography, family photography and commercial photography specializing in lifestyle images. She is also an educator & speaker on photography and the photography business.

Sandra is also involved in Global Wonders, a fair-trade business development of the SA Foundation (SAF) Canada, whose goal is to train and educate women so they can escape sexual exploitation and human trafficking and build a new life for themselves. The foundation offers recovery programs that include short and long term housing, life skills development and job training to women who have escaped sexual exploitation and trafficking. Global Wonders products are all one-of-a-kind handmade pieces made by the women in the Nepal recovery program and have become a main vehicle for educating concerned individuals & groups about the realities of sex trafficking. Global Wonders enables the women to learn job skills in order to be self-sufficient, advocating for and inspiring social change in our communities. All proceeds go back to Nepal to ensure they are able to continue offering recovery programming and financial support for these beautiful women and children. You can contact Sandra if you’d like to learn how you can get involved.

Jayme Carter: Unique Boutiqe Florals

jayme carter unique boutique florals

Unique Boutique Florals owner and Moda member, Jayme Carter, has one goal: To create artistic pieces with the highest service and quality of product so she can exceed expectations and delight every bride on her wedding day.

Jayme believes in going above and beyond her work to include personal service and value, doing whatever it takes to make the vision a reality for her clients. Time is invested into every client, spending the time for conversation, phone calls and communication so she can get a complete understanding of her client’s exact vision. Jayme believes every client should be treated with value and should receive the same in both work and service.

Jayme began her artistic journey exploring the world of arts and crafts. Everything from hand-made soaps, candles and silk flowers have played a part into where she is today. Having a true love for flowers and art, she now has been operating Unique Boutique Florals (including decor) for more than 20 years having events of all sizes and budgets.

One of her favourite weddings was having to create more than 100 large pom-poms by hand. It took her and her team hours to create, and three solid hours to hang each one for a spectacular reception ceiling decor at the Hart House in Burnaby.

Jayme’s vision for the future is to focus on larger weddings, dedicating her entire team and efforts into producing grand events dripping with creative vision and unique style and pieces. We look forward to seeing what wonderful things she will create.

Vancouver Spring Wedding

Vancouver Spring Wedding At the Roundhouse

By: Melia Sorenson

Moda Member, Melia Sorenson of Lucida Photography is inspired by good light as well as the love and beauty in the celebrations of the remarkable people she photographs. Her life is currently a balance of photography and parenting two little boys in downtown Vancouver.

“Sarah & Aaron’s wedding was our first of the year and my first after having my second baby– although I was so incredibly sore the following days that I could hardly walk I was so very happy– happy to be a part of an incredible celebration and to be able to document the wedding day of these two wonderful people. A good start to my year. I don’t as a rule post ring shots but this ring comes with a bit of a history– about a week before the wedding the ring was inadvertently trashed with some packaging. Members of the bridal party joined the bride and groom at the North Van garbage facility for a frantic search and after digging through thousands of pounds of trash they recovered this lovely ring. Sigh.”
