Miele Vancouver with Chef Poyan Danesh

With our last MODA get-together of 2016 and we wanted to end it off with a bang so we asked Chef Poyan Danesh, residing chef at Miele Vancouver to create something spectacular for us and he did not disappoint! Chef Poyan is one of Canada’s top award-winning chefs having competed on Team Canada and gaining numerous accolades for his savory and perfectly crafted dishes, it was no wonder this meal was probably one of the best I’ve ever had! We started the evening off by sharing all of the great opportunities in 2016 that we’ve had to grow MODA into the wonderful and supportive community it is today.

Chef Danesh started us off with marinated OceanWise organic mussels with a basil foam, then savored an amazing OceanWise Albacore Tuna Tataki, baby arugula and kale salad, pickled red onions with a citrus dressing. We then moved onto two of my favourites, Tandoori Chicken with a fenugreek and cardamom cream sauce and then truffled gnocchi, rose sauce with seared scallops with garlic butter lobster. I must have had about 5 servings…they were AMAZING!! We even got to flame-broil our very own crème brûlée!

“We are dedication to our craft, community and clients so that we can provide the best service possible.”

“Although my time with Tonya and Ian was relatively short, it was very enjoyable! Their wedding was so uniquely special. It truly was the joining of two families. It definitely was a more intimate one with their families and really close friends.

Right from the time I arrived at the Fairmont Pacific Rim to photograph the details and getting-ready portion on the ladies’ side to the releasing of the lanterns in the evening on the yacht, it was a truly special wedding.

Their “first-look” was a new experience for me! Ian and the boys had taken their boat from West Vancouver to meet Tonya at the dock at Harbour Green Park in Coal Harbour. Now that’s arriving in style! Ian was smitten all over again when he arrived and saw Tonya in her wedding gown for the first time.

After a the family and wedding portrait session, everyone headed over to Tavola restaurant for a private dinner. Shortly after, we headed over The Wedding Yacht (Sunset Bay Cruises) to get ready for their gorgeous ceremony on the roof of the yacht. We were delighted to see a familiar face in Marilyn Knipp who officiated the ceremony. Interestingly enough, CTV was filming a special on weddings and following Marilyn around that day! So with filming alongside our friends at FIll in the Blank Studios and the CTV crew, there wasn’t a shortage of cameras at this wedding!

The boat had set sail and the ceremony went off without a hitch, now it was time for a little mingling and cocktails for the bridal party and the guests. As the sun set, the formal part of the reception begun. There were fantastic speeches from both Tonya’s and Ian’s kids, close friends and siblings… a touch part of the evening as the big day started to come to a close. The traditional first dance was on the roof deck of the yacht which was now transformed into a dance floor. And as mentioned earlier, the night ended with Tonya and Ian lighting several lanterns in dedication to loved ones that could not be there that night with them.

An amazing day and a great throwback wedding post that we can share with you today. Enjoy some of our favs from Tonya and Ian’s big day.”

Science World Wedding – Ben & Dana

Science World Wedding by Vivid Moments

Science World has been around for more than 25 years and is more than just the iconic dome full of interactive and educational exhibits and programming. Our recent expansion has resulted in the creation of our Green Roof terrace. Fast becoming one of Vancouver’s more popular venues for weddings and other memorable events, the terrace overlooks the tranquil waters of False Creek and is framed by Vancouver’s prestigious skyline. The Green Roof is home to a manicured green space with flowers, shrubs and trees that add that touch of nature to complement the breathtaking view. Although a very popular event location on its own, the Green Roof is just one of many spaces enjoyed here at Science World at TELUS World of Science.

“We aim to capture the story of your wedding as it naturally unfolds, and provide you with the most breathtaking images of you and your partner that you can possibly imagine.”

“Our fall season started off with none other than Ben and Dana’s gorgeous wedding was celebrated at the wonderful Science World! We’ve heard many great things about this award winning venue and were glad to finally capture a real wedding there. Surrounded by an incredible view of False Creek and the romance of the sunset and city lights, it was the perfect background for this fun and energetic couple. We’ve found after all the weddings we’ve documented that if the bride and groom are cheerful and having a great time, so will everyone else . This was definitely the case for Ben and Dana as their guests bombarded them with laughter, applause, and high fives all throughout the night. So many wonderful moments were captured at this wedding, and the journey for these two is only just beginning.

Congratulations Ben and Dana for welcoming us into your beautiful celebration. We couldn’t be happier for you both!”

“I love capturing stylish couples with big hearts! My ultimate goal is to give them an amazing experience that results in amazing photos they will cherish for
a lifetime.”

“Brandy & Steven chose the beautiful Marriott Hotel in Vancouver to say their “I Do’s”. As the rain began to sprinkle the terrace with rain drops this couple said their “I do’s” this past August. Following the ceremony we took a stroll through Coal Harbor for some more photos.

Their elegant day was planned by the amazing Laura and her team at Epic Events. The ballroom was decorated ever beautifully with pink, grey, and cream colors. I absolutely loved their custom cake topper. The head table had a hedge of beautiful flowers set on pretty silver sequined head table cloth. Brock House Wedding by Vivid Moments

Brock House Wedding by Vivid Moments

Today, we share a beautiful Brock House wedding contributed by the talents of Moda Member, Vivid Moments with Raymond Chou.

raymond chou vivid moments

“Words can’t express how incredible it was to document Morgan and Zach’s wedding. We were all a bit worried at first as the morning brought some rain and grey clouds, but the weather gods, as if playing a joke, decided to be merciful and made the rain go away just in time for Morgan and Zach’s first look at Jericho Beach. It as a memorable moment to say the least, and the fact that we were the only ones there made it feel like we had the entire beach to ourselves!

The photoshoot that followed was a blast as their entire wedding party were so much fun to be around.  Afterwards we made our way to their wedding ceremony at the beautiful Brock House, where Zach and Morgan spoke their vows of love in a picturesque outdoor ceremony. Although it wasn’t sunny as we had originally hoped for, we were nonetheless welcomed by a gorgeous view of the surrounding waters and mountains of BC. Of course, what really made the ceremony, and the rest of the day, truly spectacular were all their family and friends that came to celebrate with them: their smiles, laughter, and tears of empathy and joy. The night finished on a high note with dancing and lots of it, and we even danced a bit ourselves as we were capturing some of the epic moments that unraveled.

Morgan and Zach, congratulations to you and thank you so much again for allowing us to be a part of your big day!

Vancouver Military Wedding

Lynn and James’ Vancouver Military Wedding

By Jelger & Tanja Photographers

The Vancouver military wedding of Lynn and James was, well, I don’t even know where to start! Lynn is from Belgium and met James (who’s from Vancouver) in Ypres, a Belgian city with a significant World War I history, who was there to attend a military memorial ceremony. The chances of them meeting in a random bar were so slim that it makes me wonder if he was supposed to find her. ? (goosebumps)

Even though they met briefly, they stayed in touch online. Lynn jokingly invited James to come over to Belgium, except James went for it and booked his ticket! Seeing each other again, they both felt the spark. Lynn made the brave decision to follow her heart, and move to Vancouver to be with James.

For their engagement shoot we went on a crazy hike on Mt. Cheam. It’s for sure one of our favourite shoots, so we were looking forward to their weddings(!) a lot! Plural because we’re also photographing their second wedding in Belgium!

Before the ceremony, we drove around Vancouver’s Stanley Park with the couple and the bridal party and made an impromptu hot dog pit-stop at Third Beach.  The wedding took place at the British Columbia Military Regiment in downtown Vancouver and we LOVED their setup of tanks and camouflage nets! But James truly made us gasp when he mentioned their shared passion for adventure in his personal vows.

I cried twice during the reception (Jelger once, but he might deny it ? ). Once during James’ heartfelt speech at the reception. And even harder during their amazing first dance. The way they looked at each other made the world stop for a moment.

Lynn and James are also close friends of ours, so after packing up our photo gear, we danced the night away on oldschool Belgian house music.

Thank you Lynn and James for having us! We can’t wait for your wedding in Belgium and do it all over again! ?

Rosewood Hotel Georgia

After undergoing a full renovation and reopening in 2011 as Rosewood Hotel Georgia, the hotel has been returned to its former grandeur with the additional elegance of extensive amenities and the impeccable service of Rosewood. Over the years they have hosted such classic stars as Katharine Hepburn, John Wayne, the Rolling Stones and including such royalty as HRH Edward, Prince of Wales.

Hotel Georgia: The Golden Age Reborn

Two of the most important things when it comes to venues I’ve found, is the natural look of the structure and the food. We have been attending weddings at the newly renovated Rosewood Hotel Georgia since it’s re-birth in 2011 and have not been disappointed. After months of painstaking labour to return the structure to it’s former glory of the intricate decor from it’s first days open in the 1920’s, Rosewood Hotel Georgia has been awarded numerous times for it’s outstanding service and attention to detail.  It has been named on such prestigious lists from Condé Nast Traveler US, Travel + Leisure, US News & World Report and has also received the Forbes Five Star Award.

Nicole Folino, the Catering Sales Manager has worked with hundreds of clients over the last few years, building and hosting some of the city’s top weddings and events. In addition to the ornate crown jewel of the Spanish Ballroom, they also offer smaller function rooms, still keeping with the style of the hotel’s original décor.  One of our favourites is the Tudor Room as it offers unobstructed views of the Vancouver Art Gallery and allows for natural sunlight to pour in, filling the room with a beautiful glow. Other modern options are the Bowden Room with it’s mirrored details and floor to ceiling glass windows or the outdoor bar, Reflections.

With event options ranging from 35-350 persons, there is surely something to fit all occasions.

The Vancouver Club

The Vancouver Club is one of the oldest clubs in the city. Membership is highly sought after and garners an extensive wait list. Started in 1889, it remains a host to the world’s royalty, politicians, rock stars and movie stars from around the world.

Excellence is everything at the Vancouver Club

It’s wedding day at the Vancouver Club and Senior Catering Manager, Katie Ley, begins her rounds at the club in preparation for the day’s events. Quality checks will commence with a staff meeting, usually consisting of a small army of 30 people to service a 100 person event. Staff and bar keeps are informed of the evening’s menu particulars then double-check table settings and ensuring all the details are ready for the esteemed guests to arrive.

Guests are greeted with a signature cocktail as they enter the impeccably detailed Georgian Room for cocktail hour while staff will be waiting to serve fresh canapés, garnished with delicate herbs and edible flowers grown in the Club’s exclusive roof-top garden. Everything is prepared on the day, and everything is served fresh.

To Katie, excellence is everything and it stems from a long tradition at the Club.

Founded in 1889, the present-day Vancouver Club was completed in December, 1913. Members at that time were still adorning silk top hats and ornate ballgowns.

Soon, horses and electric streetcars gave way to gas-powered vehicles. The Club saw the arrival of the radio, television, waiting lists, multiple renovations, and an amalgamation with the University Club. In 2000, the Georgian Club merged with the Club’s membership, giving distinguished women a permanent home in the heart of downtown Vancouver.

Now in its third century, the Vancouver Club is a place where global business meets rich local culture.

In May of 2015, the club recently completed a 2.3 million dollar kitchen renovation boasting a state of the art multi-media system to ensure perfect timing of production and service.

The Club is known for excellent white glove service, high standards and synchronized service which creates a setting of elegance for any event.

With a dedication to fresh locally sourced ingredients, Executive chef, Sean Cousins meticulously guides the Club’s menu with the changing seasons. Born and raised in B.C., executive chef Sean attended the esteemed Dubrulle Culinary Institute and quickly made his mark at top kitchens in Vancouver and abroad.

Highlights include leading the acclaimed Raincity Grill to several international industry awards, a stint at The Dorchester in London and leading The Vancouver Club kitchen team through a stellar menu during the 2010 Olympic Games, where he cooked for various royalty and heads of state.

Seasonal menus carry tradition while adding elements of the west coast. Fresh, locally sourced ingredients are key staples in such classics as their roasted beef tenderloin, a popular dish for weddings. During the summer months, a seared ahi tuna is on the menu while in winter their favoured short ribs are served with seasonal vegetables.

Grilled Spring salmon with pomme purée, summer vegetables and chive butter emulsion.

Slow roasted Angus beef tenderloin with pomme ‘Pear William’, roasted baby vegetables with a brandy jus.

Locally sourced ingredients include: Fraser Valley duck breast, Haida Gwaii halibut and Okanagan goat cheese mingle with bio-dynamic hen eggs and Salt Spring Island lamb while vibrant fruits and vegetables are delivered regularly from Lillooet.

Dungeness crab cake with lemon chive aioli and frisee.

Compressed watermelon, black olive on feta cheese.

Olive oil crostini with smoked tomato jam, burrata and crispy basil leaf.

Their expert Sommelier, Martha McAvity, travels continuously, always searching for the perfect addition to the Club’s extensive wine cellar. The Club boasts an exclusive Chardonnay and Bordeaux blend from Château Les Carrasses in France.  They are also one of only three recipients in the world to obtain privately bottled De Venoge Champagne, direct from France. All of these exclusive wines and champagnes are available to the Club’s wedding clients.

Watch this beautiful short film showing the journey behind the wines from Chateau Les Carrasses with Sommelier, Martha McAvity. (Video credit: Galen Lofstedt)

The Vancouver Club is a unique private venue in the centre of the city, offering an unparalleled setting for entertaining clients, family and friends. Enjoy elegantly appointed rooms, inspired local cuisine and a wine cellar second to none.

Hosting a private party with friends or a corporate event? We offer a number of multi-purpose private rooms; from a 12-guest boardroom outfitted with the latest in technology to a 200-300 guest ballroom for grand occasions.

The Grill:

The Grill is the culinary heart of The Vancouver Club. It’s also two restaurants in one elegant package. The bright, airy Atrium is ideal for a sunny lunch, while the moodier main Grill seduces with warmth and modern style. Choose a table by the fireplace and order something delicious from the most inventive menu in the city.

Roof Top Garden:

Oblivious to the busy street below, the roof is an oasis of green. Seasonal plantings, edible flowers, hard-to-source-herbs and four types of savouries make their way from soil to plate. Summer produce is preserved to make the dishes sing — even when the city is washed clean by winter rain. It’s the zero-mile diet in action and a happy marriage of tradition and creativity.

For Weddings and Events:

Rooftop garden: Max 50 people, Suitable for very small weddings with standing ceremonies.

The Georgian Room & Ballroom:

Nearing its 100th birthday, 915 West Hastings is a bastion of elegance in the middle of this city of glass. Beautifully appointed and rejuvenated, its rooms provide the ultimate in versatility: classic wood panels and post-modern chandeliers; a bright, airy atrium and a rich, gold mosaic-tiled bar; private nooks and grand ballrooms. Every space in The Club is sleek, elegant and rich with history.

For weddings and events:

Georgian room: 150 standing/50 dining/70 sit-down ceremony

Ballroom: 150 seated with dancefloor or 250 with Club buyout.

Katie invites you to come and experience the Club in person; you won’t be disappointed!

Vancouver was an exciting place to be in 1892. The Canadian Pacific Railway, completed in 1881, tied British Columbia to the rest of Canada and Vancouver was becoming one of the great seaports of the world. In this exciting time of new business opportunities, the city mayor and a group of entrepreneurs formed a businessman’s club which eventually came to be what we now know as the Terminal City Club.

Today, the club occupies a modern, multi-functional high-rise in the heart of Vancouver’s financial district. Terminal City Club has always been at the heart of Vancouver’s business, both literally and figuratively; its past and present members include some of the city’s biggest movers and shakers. There is no better place in Vancouver to meet people and make connections that can have a lasting impact upon you, your business, and the city itself.

In 2008, the club went under a $3 million dollar renovation to update and restore the overall look of the club and restaurants. Its crowning jewel is the original 1892 stained glass dome towering over the grand entrance to the main ballroom. This piece, and many others, we incorporated into the new building when it moved back in the 1990’s.

Boasting many options for events and weddings, the Club has an array of rooms and ballrooms to suit any need. One of my favourite features is the north-facing terrace which provides a wonderfully refreshing shaded area for those hot summer days. Sip on one of the many in-house creations made by their house bar-tends or sample the fine dining from their executive chef. The Terminal City Club really is a beautiful venue, both inside and out and is worth a visit to experience over 100 years of tradition and excellence.

When looking to connect with the Terminal City Club, Andrea Miller, Megan Powell and Carly Anderson will be happy to meet with you to show you around and connect for your client’s next event.
